Calvin Harris went extraordinary lengths to get Rihanna vocals

Calvin Harris went extraordinary lengths to get Rihanna vocals

Rihanna is a very busy girl. So busy that even when the biggest producer wants to get her vocals for a new smash hit, he literally has to travel the breadth of America to secure that precious recording.

Calvin Harris has revealed the lengths he had to go in order to get Riri’s vocals for their recent smash hit This Is What You Came For, and it sounds like something out of a Hollywood blockbuster.

“In the end she recorded the vocals in New York,” Calvin told Zane Lowe on his Apple Music Beats 1 show. “She was gonna do it in LA. She didn’t, she couldn’t. She had to finish her album.”

“So it got pushed back a couple months and then there was a day in New York, or like some hours in New York that she had free because she was on tour at the time as well. I said, ‘Well OK we didn’t get the vocal last time, I’m gonna fly over to New York and just make sure that I get it because I really want it today. This is the only day she has on tour, if it’s not today it’s another two months, so can I come over? So I checked into the Mercer and I waited for her engineer to call me. Her engineer didn’t call me [laughs] and then I was texting him and I was like, ‘Is she there yet?’ she wasn’t there yet. In the end it was 4am I fell asleep. I woke up at like 8 to three texts from him and he was like, ‘We got it. It’s great, let me get everything together for you. And you can come pick it up tomorrow’. So he finished at 2, my flight was at 4. We left the hotel, I had this brown bag with a hard drive in it. We drove to the studio, we heard the vocal once. I’m like ‘that’s great’, they put it on the hard drive, I put it in my bag, we drive around the corner to the helipad, we take off in the helicopter to the airport and I have this priceless vocal in my brown bag.”

“Get on the plane, I sat it there opposite me in the seat, I looked at it and I was just like that was like a bank heist. That felt incredible, knowing that I had the most important vocals that I’ve ever got and it felt amazing. I would’ve waited six months for it.”

Well, it all paid off because This Is What You Came For went on to be one of the summer’s biggest hits, peaking at No.2 in the UK and No.3 in the US. The song was also certified double platinum in the United States!

Rihanna to present her new PUMA collection at Paris Fashion Week

Rihanna to present her new PUMA collection at Paris Fashion Week

There are no less than four new designer appointments and a slew of new brands on the schedule for Paris Fashion Week, but the latest intel out of the City of Light might be its most exciting yet. On Wednesday, September 28, Rihanna will present her Spring 2017 Fenty x Puma collection during Paris Fashion Week.

“It’s a dream for me to be able to present my second collection of Fenty Puma by Rihanna in Paris,” the songstress said via release. “I approached this season very differently and felt the theme and concept was best suited for one of my favorite cities, Paris.”

The Fenty x Puma show will be staged at 7:30 and 8:30 p.m. in Paris and live-streamed exclusively on Tidal for fans to follow along. (Non-members will also be able to watch the streams on Tidal, too.) The scene of the Spring show promises to be more intimate than Rihanna’s blowout Fall outing in New York last February—and very different from a traditional runway show format. How different? Well, you’ll have to tune in on September 28 to find out.

Cara Delevingne On Being Directed By Rihanna In Her PUMA Campaign

Cara Delevingne On Being Directed By Rihanna In Her PUMA Campaign

Cara Delevingne is very selective about her modeling gigs these days, so whenever she comes out with a new shoot, it’s bound to be good. Her latest gig is no exception: Delevingne is joining Puma’s ever-buzzy ambassador family, in a campaign creative-directed by none other than Rihanna, who’s responsible for Fenty Puma by Rihanna, the brand’s most talked-about franchise. (She also happens to be Delevingne’s friend.)

Delevingne was just announced as the face of Puma’s new “Do You” initiative, which aims to encourage authenticity and motivation and to celebrate each person’s individuality — a message that’s very much in line with her ethos and public persona. The 24-year-old model and actress told Refinery29 she was drawn to the gig by the “chance to deliver a message of empowerment through confidence and honesty.”

Of course, it probably didn’t hurt that her pal Rihanna would be creative directing her in the photo shoot, either.

“It was effortless to collaborate with her because she’s a close friend,” Delevingne told us. “I really admire both her business mind and her creativity, so working on this campaign together was a really great experience,” adding that pairing up with her pal also left her inspired.

Rihanna signed a multi-year partnership with the global athletic brand back in 2014, which has lead to a creative director title at the company and the launch of the perpetually sold-out Fenty Puma by Rihanna line. (The creeper sneakers are Delevingne’s favorite item from the line so far: “I love [them] — who doesn’t?”) Rihanna’s done a lot for Puma during her brief tenure, but this is one of the first times we’re seeing her take the reigns over a campaign, rather than just designing or simply repping a new collection.

With the Do You campaign, Delevingne joins a roster of fellow famous folk, including Kylie Jenner and Rihanna, that Puma has assembled to boost the its profile — quite successfully, as a matter of fact.

The first round of imagery for this partnership features Delevingne on the streets of New York, and shot in black-and-white in a studio wearing her athleisure best. It’s a trend the actress is totally into as of late (and one we’d venture to say Delevingne was early to, given her affinity for comfort and ease in her off-duty style). “It’s easy, fresh, cool, and fun,” she says of the sporty aesthetic that’s dominated the fashion circuit for a few years now. “It’s not so serious — it’s more playful and realistic.” This is coming from the person who recently brought the tracksuit back, alongside her Suicide Squad costar Margot Robbie. “I don’t know that it ever left but I love that it is back!” Delevingne said (and she clearly is not alone in her affinity for the look). “I love a tracksuit — always have and always will.”
