How to score Rihanna’s haute holiday look

‘It’s craaaaaazy!”

That’s Jeremy Scott’s description of Rihanna’s unique and seemingly effortless ability to inhabit different looks. “She can do so much more than a model. She can make something electric.”

RiRi’s high-voltage makeup artist of more than a decade, Mylah Morales, helps generate the high-wattage style. The two have worked together since the Barbadian artist’s debut album and video, crafting arresting beauty. “We’re able to create new and innovative looks every single time,” Morales tells Alexa. “It’s great to be able to experiment and be a trendsetter.”

She’s so close to the star that they finish each other’s sentences, and each look reflects their close collaboration. And now you can expect to see even more of Morales’ magic. She’s repped
by Rihanna’s recently launched Los Angeles-based beauty and stylist agency, Fr8me, whose other clients include hair pro Marcia Hamilton and costume designer Oscar Lima.

Morales got her start painting faces at MAC and Make Up For Ever makeup counters in Los Angeles. She realized it could be a career, found an agent, and the rest is cosmetics history.

One of our favorite collaborations is the rosy statement that Ri, Dior’s first black spokesperson, rocked at the house’s spring 2016 show in Paris. A flirty version of nude makeup, it combined a cat eye with defined brows and a matte pink pout.

Morales envisions a jewel-toned holiday variation on it for Alexa readers, using rich shades like sapphire, emerald, ruby or amethyst for lips and eyes, in varying finishes. “I see matte on the lips,” she says, “and a sheen on the eyes.”

First, apply foundation, concealer, powder and blush, and maybe even highlighter. “It gives you a nice canvas to start with and then you can go and play with your lips and everything else,” she explains.

Brows should be brushed and filled in and false eyelashes are a given — Rihanna would never dream of hitting the red carpet without them. “If you’re going to do it, do it big!” exclaims Morales. “You’ll want to apply a liquid liner to conceal the glue.”

For added sparkle, Morales would swipe a glitter pen just above the regular eyeliner.

The key to polished perfection? Blend, blend and blend some more with the appropriate brushes. “Right now there are all these YouTubers and Instagrammers doing tutorials and it’s too much makeup. It’s like 10 times the Kardashians; it’s cake face,” says Morales. “If you’re going to wear a smoky eye, it has to be very well blended. Relax and take your time.”
